Boy, wouldn’t it be great if there was a simple vitamin supplement you could take to stop your acne? I mean, a single tablet you took every day with breakfast – something like that. Something that was just chock-full of all the acne vitamins and minerals you needed for an absolutely clear complexion. Brother, just point the way; sign me up; I’m there.

Unfortunately, there are no real acne vitamins. No special formula now, or on the horizon that can stop your blemishes in their tracks. There are no specific vitamins to stop acne.

But that is not to say that vitamins don’t play a role in your acne battle, because they do. Not because they’re specifically tied to acne cures, but rather because they’re tied to your overall health. And when you’re at your healthiest, you have your best chance to reduce or even remove your acne. So in that regard, acne and vitamins do go together.

Remember that acne is caused by an overabundance of oil produced by the sebaceous glands that live inside the pores of your skin. Their job is to create this oil to keep the skin hydrated and flexible. It’s just that sometimes these glands go into hyper-drive and create more than the skin can handle. This tends to occur usually during our adolescent years when our hormone levels jump off the charts. But it can also happen when we’re in our 20’s or 30’s as well. And when it happens, that’s when we have acne eruptions.

Making sure we keep our skin healthy can go a long way toward both putting the brakes on those pesky little glands and giving our skin the ability to handle the increased oil production. Nutrition plays a big role in skin health. And certain vitamins and minerals have long been recognized as essential for maximizing skin care.

Vitamin A

First discovered in the early 1900’s, vitamin A is needed for both healthy eye and skin function. It’s found in many different foods – such as broccoli & carrots, apricots & cantaloupe, and even liver, eggs and cheese. Daily recommended doses fall into the 2,500 to 5,000 IU (International Unit) range.

Vitamin B6

A little younger than vitamin A (it was discovered in the 1930’s) vitamin B6 is known to help regulate hormonal levels. Since higher than normal hormone levels can trigger higher than normal oil production in the skin, B6 is a natural acne vitamin supplement. It can be found in many meats, grains, nuts, and vegetables. Daily doses are usually recommended at the 2 mg (milligrams) level.

Zinc

Zinc is not a vitamin; it’s a mineral, but a mineral with benefits. It has certain antioxidant properties and can protect your skin against ultraviolet radiation. Daily intake of zinc can also assist your skin with healing which is helpful as you fight the damage acne causes. So it too can be considered one of nature’s acne supplements.

While these three nutrients have been linked closely to skin health and vitality, you shouldn’t ignore other vitamins and minerals. All nutrients work together in a sort of natural recipe to produce beneficial effects in our bodies. That means the best acne vitamins are really all vitamins, taken in normal doses, on a regular basis.

So don’t short-change your skin by not taking care of your entire body. Eat healthy by consuming a wide variety of foods in the proper portions. Do yourself a big favor and visit your doctor to see if he or she has some recommendations based on your current health.

And remember, there are lots of acne treatments to choose from but no specific acne treatment vitamins. And your body (and your acne breakouts) will always be better off with a balanced diet filled with all kinds of nutrients. You can’t go wrong eating healthy. And if you do, you’ll get all the acne vitamins you need.
