How Long do Hives Last?

Hives can be defined as a condition of skin that’s been caused by some sort of allergic reaction in your body. With hives, the skin gets red, swelled or itchy in nature. The center of the part of skin is pale and the entire affected area is a bit raised up.

It’s a very common skin rash that affects nearly 20 percent of people throughout their life. The rash itself can occur very suddenly and can cover either a portion of the body or the entire body. It’s not painful or life-threatening, but it is extremely irritating.

But how long do hives last? In the majority of cases, the rash lasts just a few days. In some cases, it takes a few weeks for the rashes to subside. In a small number of cases, the rash persists for 6 weeks or more.

More often than not, the condition is caused by an allergic reaction to a food or a medication. When the rash lasts longer than 6 weeks it’s probably related to an autoimmune disorder – these types of hive breakouts are considered chronic.

Treatment used to consist of frequent applications of calamine lotion, a mixture of zinc oxide and other ingredients. The lotion was designed to be an anti-itching solution. In today’s world, the most frequent treatment is a course of oral antihistamines or corticosteroids.

As allergies in children are very common, hives then tend to strike at an early age. If this happens to your child, remember that the condition is temporary and not serious. But of course it can be extremely irritating which can be difficult on a young child. So seek treatment with your doctor or urgent care physician so that the proper treatment can begin as soon as possible.
