Strep Throat and Skin Allergy Tips

Strep throat is an infection caused by bacteria known as streptococcal. Strep throat is characterized by a sudden and painful sore throat with a fever of at least 101-degrees Fahrenheit. Swallowing is very painful and your tonsils and lymph nodes located — where your neck and shoulder blades meet — will be swollen. You may also have yellow or white spots in your throat. Strep can be accompanied by a headache, stomachache and, less commonly, a skin rash.

Strep throat is contagious and can spread via airborne particles by someone sneezing or coughing. You can also catch the condition by drinking out of an infected persons cup and sharing food, or touching a doorknob or other surface with the bacteria.

A skin allergy, also known as contact dermatitis, is a condition caused by your body reacting adversely to a substance. Top skin allergies include latex, which is a type of rubber, metal and insect bites. A latex allergy occurs when the proteins in the rubber cause rashes, redness or blisters to appear on the skin. People allergic to bees, wasps, certain types of ants and hornets can develop large patches of inflamed skin after getting bit.

With a skin allergy, you can develop a variety of different reactions. Hives, known as urticaria, are characterized by itchy, raised bumps and red inflamed skin. Hives are often caused by a food or drug allergy. Eczema is a skin allergy also referred to as atopic dermatitis. Eczema is chronic, meaning that it can recur often, and is characterized by lesions, scaly or flaky skin, often affecting the face, knees or elbows. Eczema is triggered by airborne allergens like pet dander, dust and sweating. Emotional distress can cause a flare-up in older folks. Contact dermatitis is the most common type of skin condition in adults. Contact dermatitis is caused when you come in contact with a substance that irritates your skin. Known contact allergens include foods, soaps, perfumes, certain plants, rubber, dyes, cosmetics, ingredients in medications and more.

To avoid irritating your skin, here are some skin allergy tips to consider. You should use mild, fragrance free soap. To avoid detergents, wear gloves when cleaning clothing and dishes. Use a barrier cream on your skin if you are at risk of coming in contact with an allergen. Stay out of the sun. Avoid eating spicy and fried foods. Read the ingredient labels on foods if you know you have food allergies.
