Why Not an Acne Facial?

Okay, so you know how acne breakouts happen – too much oily sebum from your sebaceous oil glands along with too little dead skin shedding in your pores. And you know how you should combat the whole acne thing – a disciplined and holistic approach that calls for regular, through cleaning, the right acne products, and attention to a proper diet and proper rest. Plus you know that knocking down acne pimples is a long-distance race not a sprint. So you’re good to go and ready to give your acne a real beat down.

But you find yourself wondering if there’s some acne “booster shot” you can take that can help you get to that clear skin finish line a little faster – sort of an acne spot treatment. Or maybe there’s at least something that will at least take some of the drudgery out of all of the daily work. Well, there may just be something after all – the acne facial.

Many day spas and traditional (read “expensive”) spas have offered facial treatments for years. But now there are specific facials designed as acne facial treatments. Having one done takes in the neighborhood of one to two hours and can cost anywhere from $90.00 to $250.00 depending on the length and the “extras.” Here’s how they work.

An esthetician (think “skin care specialist”) will usually perform the treatment and begin with a deep, thorough skin cleansing. To accomplish this he or she may use over-the-counter acne products or a special acne facial cleanser home-grown at the spa. It will usually be at least as good as anything you could do for yourself at home but it will feel better simply because you’re just sitting back and having someone else do it.

Next, usually a special acne facial mask of some type is applied. It could be clay-based and blended together with natural elements and fragrances. For instance, sulfur may be part of the recipe; sulfur has been used for a long time to treat acne skin and is a common ingredient in acne facials. The mask is designed to pull out the oil and dead skin that block pores and at the same time to leave in vital moisture and minerals.

The mask is applied and left to sit for anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes or longer, depending on how much pore extraction needs to be accomplished. During that time a client might receive a partial massage to help pass the time and to provide further relaxation. Scented candles and serene music wouldn’t be uncommon either.

When the mask is removed, the dead skin cells and the excess oil are removed with it. What’s left is a deeply cleansed acne skin area free of most clogs – the type that turn into whiteheads or blackheads days later.

Facials for acne are not cheap, though you could probably put together a home acne facial for a fraction of what a spa would charge you. Still, they can be worth it for a number of reasons. First there’s the sheer pleasure of being catered to and not having to do the work yourself. Second, there’s the comprehensive nature of the acne treatment. An esthetician using proper acne facial products can really do an effective treatment on your skin. Those two reasons can make the price of an acne facial a bargain.

If you have the time and the money, a proper acne facial treatment can be a great treat. It’s also one of the best acne procedures you can undergo. It’s an extremely strong and effective weapon in your acne treatment arsenal. Regular facials will work best but even the occasional one can be a great booster shot to your total acne program.
